What is problematic on Earth is likely to be problematic in space as well – and creating a stable version of Outlook would hardly be space science. In any case, Microsoft made things a little difficult for the Artemis-II crew on their way to the moon, because one of their devices simply refused to work with e-mail.

A few hours after takeoff, Commander Reid Wiseman reported that the Outlook client was not working on the Microsoft Surface Pro device on board. In a conversation that can also be heard on NASA’s broadcast, Wiseman told ground control that “I see two Microsoft Outlooks, and neither one is working.”

To resolve this, mission control requested remote access to the device. Judd Frieling, Artemis flight controller, said at a press conference on Thursday: NASA has fixed the error. He also noted that it’s not that uncommon, as Outlook setup often runs into problems, especially when you don’t have a direct Internet connection. In this case, all you had to do was reload the files into Outlook to get the mail program working.
