    A storage device made simple with 9 hard drives

    Synology has designed the DS920 + to handle nine hard disks, primarily for small businesses. Still, it can also be a practical tool for everyday users, such as family storage, because of its simplicity.

    Anyone looking for their bread through photography and video will sooner or later be faced with the fact: they will need plenty of free storage space. Not only to back up the raw material but also to present our finished work to customers.

    While cloud storage companies are bidding on each other for customers, services like Google One, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive are trying to meet the needs of the public. For micro, small and medium businesses, this is why using a NAS can be a practical solution. We recently visited Synology’s product, the DS920 +, and we looked at what this unit is capable of.

    Before we delve deeper into what the DS920 + has to offer, it’s worth realizing what a NAS is. The acronym comes from Network Attached Storage, which means network data storage. It’s a simplistic server: its processor, cooling, and more severe storage capacity. Of course, the size of the latter depends on how much storage we have. In addition, it can automatically back up, access, and use your data not only from your home network but from virtually anywhere you have an Internet connection.

    However, it’s important to note that a NAS — if it’s just about storing files — may not necessarily compete with cloud-based hosting services. To be worth investing in such an asset in terms of value for money as an ordinary user, we need to have a lot of data to store. The real advantage is much more in the services offered by the manufacturer – Synology for our test subject. But I’ll talk about that a little later.

    Exterior

    The Synology DS920 + fits in a relatively small space due to its compact size of NAS: 199 x 166 x 233 mm (width x height x depth). In the beginning, find four racks to place the hard disks. These bins are also very easy to open and close, and the HDDs can be snapped into place with a single snap without any particular tension. In the beginning, we were a little afraid not to break any of the ears, but in our experience, not even the many inserts and inserts wore the structure. And in real life, you probably won’t open it often, at most if you want to replace a hard drive in your machine.

    There is also a power button on the front of the device, a USB 3.0 socket, and LEDs that indicate the operation of the hard disks and the machine.

    On the DS920 +, we only find Synology, but the back of the device already has a lot more to hide. First of all, here are the system fans – number two. It is important to note that this should only place the NAS not obscured by anything. Otherwise, the hard disks will not be adequately cooled.

    On the back, you will find two more Ethernet connectors, an eSATA port, a USB 3.0 socket, and a network connector.

    If we turn the DS920 + on top, we can find two more small doors at the bottom, but we can no longer add HDDs but SSDs to our system. And here, we have to stop for a moment and talk about what the device’s name says.

    Synology usually names the NASs it manufactures to read out how many hard disks it can handle in total. The DS920 + means nine HDDs: we can put four in each of the four racks, and the connectors can be added to a five-disc device. This is how the math comes out: 4 + 5 = 9. However, SSDs are not included in this storage capacity, so as a result, the device can handle a total of 11 storage spaces.

    As mentioned, a NAS is not just simple external storage but a separate computer. Inside the DS920 + is a quad-core, 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4125 processor, but the chip’s clock speed can be 2.7 GHz for increased data processing.

    It all comes with 4GB of DDR4 RAM, which at first doesn’t seem like much – considering that mobiles already have 8-12 and even 16GB of RAM – but in our experience, this configuration is plenty to do tasks back up. There is undoubtedly a faster structure on the market, but the possible lack of speed has not occurred. However, anyone who still wants more memory can expand it to 8 GB.

    The possibility of a wireless connection was left out of this device, which is a bit of a painful point, considering that one often wants to back up not only through one’s computer but also from one’s phone.

    Benefits

    Although at first, one would think that a NAS is complicated to use, in reality, this is not the case at all. Of course, it’s not as simple as an external hard drive, but it doesn’t take much more to do it in practice.

    Once the hard drives are installed, the first step is to connect the DS920 + to the router – using a LAN cable – and then we can boot the system. Once turned on, we need to perform a simple installation process using our browser.

    Software created for this purpose first formats the repositories and then installs the files required for operation. In our experience, this didn’t last more than 10 minutes. You can also set the name to access the NAS remotely later during installation. We need to pay special attention to this step so that we can reach our unit remotely, via the Internet in the future.

    After the installation, you can see a similar interface to what you are used to with, for example, your Windows computer. But instead of installing a new browser as a first step, you may want to open the Package Management Center, as this will be of great help to you later. Here are the applications we can use to get our NAS to work.

    And here we have to decide right away the most important question (if we haven’t done it before): what do we want to use the structure for? For example, if you want to store media files on it — such as the videos we’ve created that represent our portfolio — you might want to install the Media Server app, but if you’re into photography, an app called Photo Station will be the most popular important to us. But you can install the chat server on your device, complicate your mail, or use it as a Proxy Server.

    Apps are pretty easy to install on your device to do so on your mobile. Their setup is already a bit more complicated, but the system guides the user through the essential steps. Staying with the photographer’s example, once a client has a job done, we can share it with them by giving them direct access to the NAS — more specifically, the directory containing the relevant files.

    A separate link is generated for us by the photo management app, and in fact, it also allows us to password protect the data. As a result, the content can be even more secure, as only those who have the right to do so will be able to crawl the path.

    With the help of the status indicator built into the device’s system, we can also monitor the structure’s performance, so it is also easy to spot if someone is using the system.

    Summary

    Positive: quiet operation, easy operation, ample range of applications, stable system.

    Negative: No wireless communication, more for business use.

    What we feared would make the device loud because of the two fans has not been proven. However, you still have to get used to the hum of it, especially if you have been using a laptop with an SSD for many years.

    Although Synology offers the DS920 + NAS for home use and business, it needs to belong to the former target group to take advantage of the structure. If only because the price is around 210 on the domestic market, and this only includes the device, hard drives and SSDs are not included.

    If you only want to use the device to store your files, you may not get the price back soon, but we can already talk about a good value for money with applications.

    According to Samsung, the S4 monitor’s 2-megapixel camera and infrared camera allow users to rapidly join conference calls or virtual events. The camera rises at the top of the display when the pressed right technology is generated in a single move before calls.

    The S4 display is Windows Hello certified, making logging in a breeze. Users may unlock their computer in as little as two seconds. The system employs biometric sensors to scan users’ faces, eliminating the need to input a password to access devices, programs, and Websites running Windows 10 or, shortly, Windows 11.

    The 24-inch Samsung S4 Monitor offers a 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle with a Full HD resolution. More connectors are released due to the built-in webcam and speakers, as there is no need to plug in these external devices, providing more space for additional peripherals. The display also functions as a USB hub, allowing you to connect many devices to a USB-connected laptop simultaneously. (There are HDMI, DP, D-Sub, and audio outputs on this unit.) Two built-in 2 W stereo speakers produce the sound.

    After a long wait and much speculation, Microsoft finally revealed when it would make Windows 11 available at the end of August. According to this, the premiere will take place on 5 October, which will not only be updated but is also planned to be available on new laptops from certain manufacturers in pre-installed form.

    Exactly which machines will be added to store shelves with Windows 11 is unknown, but the name of a manufacturer has already appeared on the list listing this: That of Lenovo.

    The Chinese company also unveiled two laptops that will run Microsoft’s latest operating system. This means that the 14- inch Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Carbon and the 16-inch ultra-thin Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro will be the ones that will be available with pre-installed Windows 11. The company has also updated its ThinkBook portfolio for business use, where you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. Exactly when it’s not yet known.

    The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Carbon is also a 1.07-kilogram structure with a 14- inch display with QHD+ resolution. Inside is the AMD Ryzen 7 5800U processor, and Nvidia GeForce MX450 delivers graphics performance. In terms of storage, a 1TB SSD has been added inside, and there will be a 16GB version of memory.

    The Yoga Slim 7 Pro weighs a slightly larger weight of 2.1 kilograms. Furthermore, Huawei MateView GT is capable of 350 nits of highlight brightness for a more realistic content display, a contrast ratio of 4000:1, and it also supports HDR 10 technology.

    Adjusting the display’s brightness in low-light conditions and overexposed scenes can help players quickly detect opponents. In addition, the display includes a crosshair feature specially designed for first-person shooter games (fps) and allows you to aim and shoot quickly.

    The user experience is enhanced not in image but sound because two 5-watt speakers with 2.0 stereo sound are built into the monitor stand.     Samsung’s 2021 Odyssey series debuted with three brand new monitors. The gamer displays came with a completely flat panel and sought to benefit computer and console users. The new series includes the G70A, G50A, and G30A.

    Of the three, the top model is the 28-inch G70A with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and an IPS panel with a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz. The total brightness of the panel is 400 nits.

    Although the average output is 300 nits, the monitor supports the VESA DisplayHDR 400 standard. In addition, Samsung’s top monitor has both AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support and Nvidia G-SYNC Compatible certification. The monitor has a single DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 connectors.

    The latter connects to the latest generation of consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as the new consoles require an HDMI 2.1 connection for a 4K 120 Hz video signal. The Auto Source Switch + provided by the novelty allows the monitor to turn on automatically and switch to the appropriate source when a connected device is turned on.

    The next model in the line is the G50A, which offers a 27-inch resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, also an IPS panel, but this time with an image refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. Samsung’s screen supports FreeSync Premium and is also G-SYNC Compatible certified, offering a single DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 port for connectors.

    The G70A and G50A both have Picture-in-Picture, Picture-by-Picture, low input lag, and many other modes. Monitors promise a response time of 1 ms.

    Last but not least, the Samsung Odyssey G30A debuted, which will be available in two sizes, with both 24- and 27-inch screen diagonals. Whichever one you choose, we will have a VA panel with Full HD resolution and an image refresh rate of up to 144 Hz. Unfortunately, HDR support is lacking, and the maximum brightness isn’t something bright either – you know – you can only count on 250 nits.

    FreeSync Premium is supported, but the panel is not Nvidia-certified G-SYNC Compatible. Let’s say it’s easy to see how it works in practice. The connector range consists of a single DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 port.

    The brand new monitors will be available in black, and the included stand is height-adjustable, tiltable, rotatable, and has a pivot option. Samsung has not yet announced the expected price of the monitors or which markets will be available.

    The company’s new NUC Extreme machines already have a highly modular system. It is finally possible to create much more severe configurations than before and improve them over time by replacing components. For all this, the manufacturer is asking for $1,150 and $1,350, respectively, depending on whether users are requesting new NUC Extremes with a Core i7 or Core i9 processor.

    Like a shock to the news, PC gamers were banned from roughly high-power gaming PCs in 6 U.S. states – California, Colorado, Oregon, Hawaii, Vermont, and Washington. This sounds shocking at first, but the story is more nuanced than that.

    Well, but what is it about? Around 2017, an energy law was drafted and is now coming into force. There is a so-called Expandability Score (also ES for simplicity), which calculates how much ES a given machine falls in based on its power consumption: a high score means good, a low score means terrible. If the machine range is above 690 ES, it meets expectations. But if the ES range is low, then either the configuration needs to be optimized. Otherwise, it is disabled.

    This is clear so far, but the legislation has its oddities. California gamers consumed a total of 4.1 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2016, which equates to $ 700 million, or $ 213 billion, an amount arguably brutal. Consoles accounted for 60 percent of this number yet were left entirely out of the new legislation. Consumption of desktops contributed 31 percent to this relentless amount.

    Interestingly, the legislation only affects the electricity consumption of private households, with server farms, development companies, and other workstations wholly excluded from the law, which is also strange because California is one of the international strongholds of IT, led by Silicone Valley. And the sharpest piquancy of the thing is that the legislation only applies to pre-assembled machines. If someone wants to build a PC, it could be a nuclear power plant, and the legislation is not affected.

    Dell Alienware machines are no longer available in the states below, and if someone wants to buy an Aurora R12 from Oregon, for example, their order will be canceled. The law was born for sustainability reasons but not thoroughly thought out.

    On the one hand, automatic upgrade to Windows 11 will have to wait a while longer (such an upgrade of existing Windows 10 PMs will not begin until 2022); on the other hand, system requirements will increase significantly, there are severe hardware and software conditions for the upgrade – you can find details about the configuration here.

    GitHub now has a constantly updated open-source application (WhyNotWin11) that shows whether or not a computer can run Windows 11 and details which parts of your PC are compatible with the minimum requirements of Windows 11 and which are not.

    The app itself is an exe file, and if you click it after downloading it, it will immediately report the result: in the form of a table made clear in colors. Red marked get in the way of Windows 11, while yellow shows that it’s not clear whether that factor prevents you from installing Windows 11. Of course, if everything is green, you’re fortunate: nothing will stand in the way of enjoying the benefits of the new operating system.
